At the age of 37 I found myself waking in the night drenched and during the day fatigued. Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It is officially diagnosed after a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. Menopause happens when the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen and progesterone, hormones involved in regulating menstruation and ovulation.

There are three key stages of the menopause - perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.
- Perimenopause is the transition phase that can begin from the age of 35 when oestrogen production becomes irregular which results in changes to menstrual patterns and can come with symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats.
- Menopause is the second stage, occurring when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. Oestrogen levels see a significant drop and continue to fluctuate, marking the end of reproductive years.
- Postmenopause represents the years after menopause, where symptoms seen during perimenopause tend to ease. Hormone levels remain consistently low leading to an increased risk of certain health issues including heart disease and osteoporosis.

Weight gain during menopause is completely normal and very common, this is due to a combination of factors including hormonal changes, aging, lifestyle, and genetics. As your oestrogen levels drop, this can lead to a slower metabolism and consequently weight gain. Menopause can also lead to a change in fat distribution, often meaning more fat is stored in the abdominal area rather than on the hips and thighs. Lifestyle changes such as reduced physical activity and changes in diet can also contribute to weight gain.

By participating in a mix of aerobic activities, strength training and flexibility exercises, you can help offset the weight gain you might experience with the hormonal changes of menopause. Exercise helps by boosting metabolism, increasing muscle mass and consequently reducing body fat. Exercise has also been shown to help improve your mood, strengthen your bones and improve your cardiovascular health, which are particularly important as oestrogen levels decline.
Following a healthy diet will also allow you to manage your weight during menopause, focussing on these key principles
- Eat balanced meals – including fruits, vegetables, protein sand whole grains
- Reduce added sugar – by limiting refined sugary snacks and drinks
- Increase fibre intake – include vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains
- Incorporate healthy fats – such as avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil
- Stay hydrated – by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
- Moderate portion sizes – eating smaller meals more often to control calorie intake

Potentially, yes. If you are still having menstrual periods, even if they are irregular, ovulation is still occurring, and therefore it is still positive to get pregnatt. If you’re over 50, you may be able to get pregnant up to 12 months after your last period. If you’re under the age of 50, you may be able to get pregnant up to two years after your last period. So, if you need to use contraception, you should continue using it during this time.

A decrease in oestrogen levels can affect bones and muscles. Oestrogen helps to regulate the turnover of bone tissue and supports muscle function. A drop in oestrogen levels affects bones and muscle in 2 key ways:
- Bone density loss: your bone breaks down at a higher rate during menopause and the generation of new bone slows. This can lead to a higher rate of osteoporosis and fracture.
- Muscle mass reduction: A drop in oestrogen can lead do a decrease in muscle mass and strength, this condition is known as Sarcopenia. Consequently, this can reduce your physical stability and increase your risk of falls.
